Featured Artist Performance
This year's 31 Days of Mehron Halloween Instagram contest introduced Mehron to an incredibly talented new artist. Rigoberto Yepiz, a 28-year-old makeup and special effects artist from Tuscon, Arizona, submitted an image of an evil scarecrow. We were impressed by how this artist - who has only been practicing the craft for one year - truly demonstrated the power of Mehron products. It was an honor to crown him the contest's Grand Champion. We were also truly inspired by his humble reaction to the win. He posted the following image and message on his Instagram page:
King on the Edge. This look is representative of the struggles and the hard work it took to win @mehronmakeup Halloween challenge.
Crowned the winner, I had my share of let downs, disappointments, and failed hopes along the way. I actually threw away some of the looks I had planned because I still doubted myself, and still doubted that the looks were acceptable.
I utilized the pins in an editorial fashion to represent the feelings of self doubt and the struggle of trying to appease myself. We truly are our own worst critics.
The machete represents the cutting off of my own feelings of not being good enough that prevented me from seeing those looks through.
The golden studs represent all of you, the ones who encouraged and supported me and gave positive feedback about my looks. Without you and your support, I would have never gotten this far.
The crown represents my win, which is something I never dreamed would happen.
This look represents all of that, and is a message to anyone who is trying so hard for something that seems impossible. You can do it. Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t listen to the voices that tell you you can’t do it because you can. I want to tell you all how extremely grateful I am for your love and support and how I could’ve never done this without your comments, likes and love. Thank you so much I LOVE YOU ALL
We choose Rigoberto as our Spotlight Artist because he truly embodies a Mehron Boy. He is not only an artist, he is an inspiration, and his drive for excellence has won our hearts.
Q and A
Mehron: What drew you to makeup?
Rigoberto: I've always had a passion for editorial work and fashion. Watching runway shows and magazines made me feel inspired; I felt like I could do it one day. My love for film, specially horror movies, and TV shows play a big part in all I create. Of course, music and pop culture are also a huge part of what drew me to love makeup and everything about it. I think about makeup as beautiful art that not only lets you express yourself in many different ways, but also lets you transform yourself and become something beyond your imagination. I finally decided to give working with makeup a try; I stopped dreaming about it and made it a reality. I love doing it every day, and I haven't stopped since I started.
Mehron: What is your first makeup memory?
Rigoberto: My first memory would be watching Lady Gaga's Born This Way music video. I immediately felt attracted to her skull face look with the pink pony tail and zombie boy makeup. I went so crazy and excited for it that I decided to give it a try. That was the first thing I tried and my makeup obsession started after that moment.
Mehron: As a self-taught artist, how did you learn and hone your skills?
Rigoberto: Like most self-taught artists, I learned watching YouTube videos and getting inspired by all the amazing artists out there - practicing everyday, whether it's makeup, body paint or SFX.
Mehron: What artists inspire you?
Rigoberto: Lady Gaga is my absolute inspiration for everything, I love her so much. Not only is she a great performer, but her fashion and makeup totally suits my crazy imagination. She's just so amazing. Mykie Glam and Gore is also a big inspiration for me. She is beyond this world, and her art and originality always speaks to me. And, of course, the queen of makeup Pat McGrath. She is truly amazing and her work is out of this world incredible.
Mehron: What inspired you to enter the 31 Days of Mehron Halloween contest?
Rigoberto: This was my first year doing makeup, and in our community October is one of the most important months because you can express and create everything you want without limits. I've been a Mehron Boy since day 1 of doing makeup, so when I saw the post for the 31 Days of Mehron Halloween Contest, I got super excited and happy because it was a new challenge for me to show everyone not only my looks, but also my skills in different areas of makeup. Mehron has beauty, body paint and SFX, so it was the perfect opportunity to express myself and show everyone my progress and love for makeup.
Mehron: What does it mean to you to be the contest's Grand Champion?
Rigoberto: You can't imagine how happy I am. Honestly, I still can't believe it. Winning means the world to me because it gave me the opportunity to show my art to so many more people. I'm so grateful for this amazing opportunity and can't thank Mehron enough. I want to be an example that you don't have to be a big account to win something so big as this.
Mehron: What advice would you share with other new artists?
Rigoberto: Never stop believing in yourself, never doubt your work, and please never stop dreaming because dreams do come true. I'm an example of that. Most importantly, always be yourself, be strong, and never let fear take control of you.
